Friday, July 14, 2000 -Shut up and get to the pictures- I was very pleased with SF7140. It maintained a futuristic look throughout, and ended up with an interesting arch. Like many fortresses, it had an element of cathedralism as well (if I may make up my own word). I put a secret entryway just under the arch for the citizens of SF7140. The tower on the left looks a bit unusual with its twin points. This is because that's not how it looked originally. It was much taller, taller than the other tower, and as I carved, I developed a tall arch-type hole vertically through the top. It started off as an accident, but the more I carved it, the more interesting it looked. I ended up carving a complete curving arch through the top and it looked cool, until it collapsed. I just took too much sand out. Hopefully I can remember how I did it or how it looked so I can try to repeat it.
Ronbo spent a large part of his day in the water, body boarding and doing battle with the obnoxious Man-O-War jellyfish. They were everywhere that day; in the water and washing up on the beach. They sting like a bad sunburn on contact, whether in the water or up on land. After Ronbo got stung a few times in the water, he came ashore and got revenge on the jellyfish. This was accomplished by packing together a sand ball then throwing it full force straight down on top of the jellyfish. If done correctly, you can hear the "pop" of its little balloon bursting under the pressure. I would occasionally take a break from the fortress to pop a few myself. The little bastards like to catch a wave up the beach and float into the pool of water near the fortress and sting me. While this battle was ensuing on Bellows Beach (which is on a military base, quite appropriately), Davey was making a sand creation of his own, a life size sand girl. He did it mostly by hand and it was quite cool. The photos of his girl are in the supplemental photo directory. Davey's digital camera has a focusing lens, something I'm not used to with the standard disposable cameras I normally use. I took advantage of this to get some interesting close-ups I can't normally get. We stayed until sunset, which reflected off the water. It's difficult to capture a good sunset, but I tried here. And it was very cool to have my brothers at the beach with me.
