Meiko, Lisa, and I went to Lanikai Beach. The tides weren't timed right for a drainage system, so I just brought the carving tools. Once again, like the week before, I felt like just going swimming and playing around in the water with Lisa and Meiko and didn't really want to build a fortress. Once again, like the week before, the sand was calling me and so I built another tower. (Happily, I wasn't forced to destroy this one like I did with SF6170.) It was around four feet tall, maybe taller. Since I was learning so much in my Japanese language class, I decided to incorporate some of it into the tower, thus the kanji character.

-Shut up and get to the pictures-

Lately, the fortresses and towers seem to taking on a more natural shape, looking less like buildings and more like sculptures. I like making buildings though, and even though the sculptures have looked nice, after this one, I want to gravitate back towards a more structure-like look.

Many people stopped and commented on the tower, which is common at friendly Lanikai. One Japanese woman exercising with a brisk walk in her sweat pants and headphones slowed down and asked me if I was Japanese. I said no and she stopped, pointing to the kanji character with a look asking for explanation. I told her "nihongo o benkyoo shimasu." ("I'm  studying Japanese.") She said, "Ah." knowingly and smiled. I was happy that my kanji character was actually viewed by a stranger who understood it. Meiko speaks Japanese too, and has helped me a lot with my Japanese class. (I would go on to get an "A" in the class thanks largely to her.)

For fun, I also built several quick little cubic towers around the base of the main tower. I've had an idea to build, instead of one, large structure, several small structures--little towers that are quick and easy--and cover the beach with them. I'm not sure how many I could build, 30, 40, maybe 100? I think it would look cool to have dozens of little towers all over the beach. Reminiscent of Easter Island, perhaps. While thinking about this, I built a few around the base of this tower to get a feel of what it might look like. If I had help, we could make tons of them. I think it would be cool.

I finished the tower with plenty of time to play in the ocean with Lisa and Meiko so I went swimming. Today, that was my favorite time at the beach. I'd like to build smaller projects more often and have time to play, but already I'm itching to build another big arch. It's been a couple weeks now since I've built one.

Perhaps next week.

 Photographs Chronologically

The only photo that's even remotely of chronological importance is one of me building one of the mini towers. The main fortress is complete in every photo so a chronological listing for SF6240 is unnecessary.
