June 3, 2000 -Shut up and get to the pictures- While I don't really like symmetry, I do like consistency in my sand fortresses, and I concentrated on consistency with SF6030. I brought back the tower design from SF4220 and built four towers, all with a similar futuristic/lighthouse design. I also built a small arch. I didn't have a lot of time so I didn't put a lot of detail into this one. While I was carving it, it occurred to me that this could be a case when less is more. The lack of a lot of detail made the towers look perhaps more... menacing. Now a veteran of sand fortress construction on Bellows, I was well prepared for its severe and unsympathetic tide. I made a huge sand base and built the fortress way back on the inside edge of the base. It paid off because the fortress stood up against the tide. Although the tide never did reach high enough up the beach to flood it, it smacked the front quite a few times--with no damage. Weeks ago, I discovered that I could repair notches in edges and corners with fresh wet sand. I just grab some of the wettest sand I can find, plop it over the notch, and carve the excess away as soon as possible. I used this technique a few times today quite successfully. There are little crabs living all over Bellows Beach and sometimes I accidentally dig one up. The first time that happened, I freaked out when a spiky, little crab went jumping out of a handful of wet sand. I'm a little more used to this now but I still jump when one goes running out of a handful of wet sand. Upon completion of the fortress, I took pictures as usual. When I was finished, I noticed that a small crab was living underneath the fortress. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw some sand being thrown out of a small hole right underneath my arch. It was a crab's hole. When he came up and saw the huge fortress that was now his home, he must have been blown away.
